Collaborative project: Biotechnical control of cherry fruit fly species (Rhagoletis cerasi and R. cingulata) considering the reduction of insecticide use – Subproject 2
Project
Project code: 2814202506
Contract period: 01.05.2007
- 29.02.2012
Budget: 330,975 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
The project aimed at providing sustainable methods to control cherry fruit flies. We developed bait sprays with plant derived insecticides (NeemAzal®-T/S and NeemAzal®-T, a.i. Azadirachtin (Neem), Spruzit® Neu, a.i. Pyrethrines). Investigating bait acceptance and persistence by varying numerous components, such as sugars and protein sources, additives to increase rain fastness and UV-stability, insecticide rates and mixtures, we . achieved appropriate baits. Regarding bait uptake NeemAzal®-T revealed to be more favourable compared to NeemAzal®-T/S, Spruzit was strongly repellent. Weekly applications of low amounts of NeemAzal baits achieved efficacies up to 100% in field cages and after optimizing the trial design 94% in a field test, with an infestation rate of 0.5%, clearly below the economic threshold. As Azadirachtin inhibits ovarian maturation and egg development it is most efficient when ingested by young females. The use of NeemAzal bait sprays seems to be promising, especially in isolated cherry orchards or when applied in large-scale, where the risk of immigration of mature females is low.
