Collaborative project: Development of a rain sensor for kinetic energy and water wettness to improve scab prognosis in apple cultivation – Subproject 2
Project
Project code: 2815304207
Contract period: 01.10.2008
- 30.04.2012
Budget: 164,924 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
The cooperation project was performed with a company for meteorological devices (Thies Clima, Göttingen) and a federal research institution (Julius Kühn-Institute, Institute for plant protection in fruit crops and viticulture, Dossenheim). Innovative sensors for kinetic energy of rain and leaf wetness are the requirements to improve scab prognosis in view of the efficiency in scheduling fungicide applications. Rain sensors were developed to determine exactly the start of rain associated with kinetic energy and to indicate leaf wetness with the differentiation of dew or fog. The thresholds of kinetic rain energy for initiation of spore discharges from fruiting bodies of the scab fungus and the periods of leaf-wetness correlated with the respective temperatures and the light conditions were detected in the orchard. Proven infections in the orchard with bioassays were used for biological evaluation of the sensoric data. The project is the basis for the development of sensor devices to achieve market maturity.
