Environment and ressource management

Project code: DFG SPP 1090
Contract period: 01.01.2000 - 01.01.2006
Purpose of research: Basic research

The project deals with the characterization of the influence of oxydative exoenzyme production by fungi and mycorrhizas on formation and degradation of organic matter in soils. Two steps are planed over the whole duration of the research program. First, specific primers to reveal soil and mycorrhiza fungi with genes encoding for laccase and to analyse the expression of these genes will be designed. To assess the ecological validity of the analyses, extraction procedures of DNA and mRNA from soil samples will be optimized and standardized. In a second step, the method will be used by agricultural sand forest soils from the common experimental fields of the project. The revealed structure and functions of the fungal populations will be related to the different analyses performed on the same soils by the members of the program, i.e. with data on content and cycling of solid and dissolved organic soil substances, on fractionation of natural isotopes and on formation and degradation of organic matters by soil microorganisms and animals. Participation to experiments with radioactive labeled litter is part of the program.
