Mutagenicity and toxicity of water pipe smoke
Project
Project code: BfR-PRS-08-1322-246
Contract period: 01.07.2006
- 31.12.2009
Purpose of research: Applied research
In contrast to the use of cigarettes the use of waterpipes (shisha) increased considerably among young adults. Only a few data exist about the health hazards and the consequences of long time use of waterpipes.; ; First studies of the BfR showed that the smoke of waterpipes has cytotoxic properties. Stud-ies on volunteers showed additionally, that certain amounts of nicotine and considerable amounts of carbon monoxide will be absorbed. Using a custom-made pump for the smoking of waterpipe, the smoke will be investigated on the biological activity (mutagenicity and cyto-toxicity) and on the content of nicotine, tar, water and aldehydes.
