Project code: BfR-BIOS-02-1322-296
Contract period: 01.05.2007 - 31.12.2007
Purpose of research: Applied research

Campylobacter species have been recognized as a major source of human gastrointestinal diseases caused by the ingestion of contaminated food. Poultry, and especially chicken are considered major reservoirs of Campylobacter infection. Besides hygiene, additional measures have to be developed in order to reduce the number of Campylobacter in animals and on food products. Biocontrol by application of Campylobacter specific bakteriophages is a promising tool to attain this goal. First experiments performed in England and The Netherlands showed that the pathogen numbers could be significantly reduced by the combat with phages. As in Germany no information on Campylobacter phages is available as yet, this project concentrates on the isolation and characterization of Campylobacter specific phages. The results are valuable and supposed to provide a basis for further applications.
