Project code: DFG SPP 1090
Contract period: 01.01.2000 - 01.01.2006
Purpose of research: Basic research

Quantitative knowledge about the assimilation rates of crop residues into different fractions of the soil organic matter (SOM) is an important prerequisite for an understanding of the regulation of the stabilization of organic substances in soils. The objective of the project is to study the turnover and stabilization rates of maize C in the soils of the maize monocultures (since 1961) of the long-term field experiment 'Ewiger Roggen'; ('eternal rye'). The analysis is done using natural 13C-abundance in different SOM fractions (physical fractionation, extraction, pyrolysis). The significance of the SOM pools of different age classes (derived from the maize or older than 1961) as a substrate for the DOC production and the soil respiration is quantified. The effect of inorganic fertilizer addition on the turnover and stabilization rates of corn residues is studied. The results are utilized for the modeling of the dynamics of C turnover processes using the Rothamsted C Model.
