Project code: BfR-CHS-02-D 1334-13
Contract period: 01.10.2001 - 30.06.2004
Purpose of research: Basic research

Assessment of the health risk posed by chemicals is based on exposure analysis and on the performance and evaluation of toxicity testing in animals. However, this traditional approach of toxicity testing involves a number of problems. In particular, long-term testing to detect carcinogenic effects is rather time-consuming and raises ethical problems. Unless mechanistic data are established simultaneously, there will be problems in the evaluation of results from animal studies and their extrapolation to man due to species-specific differences. Toxicogenomic and proteomic approaches are widely explored to evaluate their usefulness for detecting early toxicological endpoints and for gaining insight into the mechanisms behind the toxic response. Here we use an animal model to demonstrate the usefulness of these methods to find early biomarkers of hepatocellular cancer. This may contribute to reduce long-term animal studies and is important in the course of the new EU-chemicals policy.
