Availability-ensurance and -improvement of organically produced red clover seed by development of selection methods for seed- and soilborne fungal diseases with the aim to breed sustainable resistant varieties

Project

Project code: 2806OE161
Contract period: 01.04.2009 - 31.03.2012
Budget: 138,400 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

The goal of the project is to safeguard and improve the availability of organically produced red clover seed. Through the development of selection procedures compared to seed-and soil-borne fungus diseases, this leads to a sustained breeding of resistant varieties. Red clover as nitrogen-fixing legume plays a very important role in organic farming. In addition to mixed cropping with forage grasses for producing protein-rich forage base in livestock holdings, he finds in the rotation as nitrogen for subsequent collector, consuming crops use. Lately, however, are growing indications that the red clover seed-borne diseases spread. As they proceed, this development would have to be stained and seeds during seed production should be used fungicides. In organic farming only resistant varieties could be used. Resistant varieties are available but not why organic farming has the worst expect the red clover only partly available, with corresponding implications for crop rotation and N supply. The project is working to counteract this development by using the currently available range of varieties of red clover will be described in terms of its resistance status. This selection process practicable resistance against soil-and seed-borne, fungal pathogens of the genera Colletotrichum, Pythium, Phoma, Fusarium, Pythium should be developed Rhizoctonia. Following resistant red clover varieties should be produced material compared to the pathogen group by cleaving Rotkleepopulationen, analyzed the inheritance of genetic resistance and used for molecular marker analysis.
