Project code: 2806BM0022, JKI-ZO-08-4143
Contract period: 15.03.2007 - 30.04.2011
Budget: 101,321 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: wild crabapple

The aim of the project is the preservation and sustainable use of the crab apple (Malus sylvestris) in the Ore Mountains. For this aim the in-sizu population of the investigation area was recorded and mapped. Furthermore the morphological and genetic traits were characterised. Based on this analysis and characterization of the genetical diversity a managmentplan for the in-situ preservation and sustainable use of the crab apple will be elaborated. The project resulted in a concept to preserve the crab apple as a genetical resource in Saxony as well as in other areas of Germany and is conferrable to other wild fruits. For this reason the project provides a fundamental contribution to the preservation and sustainable use of the biodiversität and is used for the development of concepts of in-situ preservation.

Within the project 720 crab apple trees were mapped and the fruit and seed descriptors of 499 trees were scored. The collected data were recorded in the project database. For 65 wild apple trees primary fostering was realised. Based on morphological data 266 wild apple trees were selected for the genetic analysis and examined using12 SSR markers. A first statement of the occurrence of genuine Malus sylvestris and hybrids was made. 96 genotypes were examined concerning their vitamin C content and first vitamin C determinations were carried out in tea mixtures.
