Sustainable improvement on the availability of organic vegetable seeds increased by screening and /on-farm/ conservation
Project
Project code: 2806OE154
Contract period: 16.04.2007
- 15.03.2010
Budget: 209,100 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
With the aim to test the suitability of varieties for organic vegetable gardening, samples of 164 still available conventionally bred open pollinated varieties have been acquired from the European seed market, viz 15 kohlrabi, 86 carrot and 63 leek varieties, as parent material for screening. During a two year period 143 of those were tested on suitability for organic cropping in /on-farm/ field trials on eleven biodynamic sites throughout Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands. More than half of these varieties have been propagated for maintenance purposes. Those varieties classified as directly suitable for commercial organic production on the basis of /on-farm/ trials will be examined in further (partly external) tests. Additionally, conservation and seed multiplication were established, already initiated during the project duration.
