Collaborative project: Resource Management –Implementation of Modern Irrigation Scheduling Strategies for Quality Assurance in Viticulture – Subproject 2

Project

Project code: 2814401508
Contract period: 15.11.2009 - 15.05.2013
Budget: 163,515 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

Precise irrigation scheduling can be an important means of quality assurance in vineyards of low water-holding capacity even under traditionally non-irrigated conditions. Precondition is a scheduling concept based on adequate assessment of actual plant water status. Appropriate concepts have been developed for small-scale purposes. However, for responsible water use to be widely accepted in viticultural practice it is necessary to find organisational forms for large-scale projects without supervision of every single plot. Therefore criteria for the classification of vineyard sites into drought stress categories as well as ways and means for dealing with heterogeneities and the variation within categories over time have to be developed. The final goal would be to closely supervise selected reference vineyards of large irrigation collectives as a base line from where extrapolations into other vineyards can be made to minimize the risk of inadequate water supply negatively affecting fruit and wine quality.
