Project code: 4102606
Contract period: 01.12.2006 - 31.03.2010
Budget: 151,176 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

Tan spot, caused by the fungus Pyrenophora tritici-repentis, is one of the most important foliar diseases of wheat. In the frame of this project, 8 PTR-isolates, which were collected in Germany and Hungary, were classified. Four out of these were classified as PTR race 8, which was the most frequent one. Based on phenotypic data estimated in three years field trials on 4 DH-populations and respective genetic maps (SSRs, DArTS, AFLPs), major QTL for resistance to P. tritici-repentis were identified on chromosomes 1A, 5B and 7B. These results are the basis to screen wheat accessions for resistance using defined isolates and they facilitate efficient marker based selection for tan spot resistance in wheat breeding.
