Investigation of the origin of nortestosterone in different animals
Project
Project code: BfR-LMS-08-1322-330
Contract period: 01.01.2005
- 31.12.2009
Purpose of research: Basic research
19-nortestosterone or 17-nandrolone belongs to the group of steroid hormones with androgenic and anabolic effects. The use of these substances is prohibited in the EU for food producing animals. But this substance is used illegally both for growth promoting purposes in food producing animals and for doping purposes in human sports. A few years ago nandrolone was considered as solely synthetically steroid. The illegal use was confirmed if it was detected in animals using methods with a limit of detection above 2µg/kg. But studies revealed that besides illegal administered, nandrolone was also produced endogenously in different animals. In high concentrations 19-nortestosterone was detected in non-castrated boars in different body fluids and tissues. Lower amounts of 19-nortestosterone were also detected in stallions, castrated pigs, mares, different pregnant animals (cow, sheep, goat), in the urine of newborn calves, and also in humans.
