Effect of agricultural management on temporary carbon sinks in the form of crop residues and plant roots.
Project
Project code: JKI-PB-08-035
Contract period: 01.01.2000
- 31.12.2010
Purpose of research: Applied research
Nearly half of the biomass of agricultural crops is formed by the roots as the main underground plant organ. Although, the root development is genetically determined, it responds measurably to changes in growth conditions. Long-term field experiments indicate that the root formation of crops can be strongly influenced and controlled by the agricultural management. The contribution of plant roots and crop residues remaining in the field after harvesting to the temporary C and N storage in the soil will be explored.
