Viruses of Gramineae potentially affecting cereal cultures in Germany -Development of detection methods and characterization of biological, serological and genetic diversity.
Project
Project code: JKI-EP-08-004
Contract period: 01.01.2009
- 31.12.2011
Purpose of research: Applied research
Cereal species can potentially become infected by a great number of various viruses. Solely for wheat about 34 naturally occurring viruses are described in the literature. Due to the changing environmental and production conditions, new virus diseases can potentially emerge in cereals also in Germany. As a concrete example the occurrence of Wheat streak mosaic virus recently discovered in several countries adjacent to Germany may be considered. Goal of the project is to develop sensitive detection techniques for such viruses and the characterization of their biological and serological properties. In order to determine genetic variability sequence analyses will be performed and PCR-based specific detection methods have to be developed.
