Project code: BfR-LMS-02-1322-284
Contract period: 01.02.2007 - 31.12.2007
Purpose of research: Basic research

Because of their ability to differentiate into polarized epithelial cell monolayers Caco-2 cells are used as a model to investigate biotransformation and transport processes in order to predict the oral bioavailability of nutrients, phytochemicals and other xenobiotics. The superfamily of Glutathione-S-transferases (GSTs) (EC 2.5.1.18) are the most important phase II enzymes with a wide range of exogenous and endogenous substrates. The expression of GSTs in Caco-2 cells was characterized in 1989, but new isoforms have been identified in the last years. The new characterisation of GST expression in differentiated Caco-2 cells has to be determined as indicator of effects of plant-derived phytochemicals used as food ingredients.
