Project code: BfR-PRS-02-1322-246
Contract period: 01.07.2006 - 31.12.2007
Purpose of research: Basic research

There are no investigations available on the mutagenicity of water pipe smoke. First experiments were initiated in 2006 to clarify the hazards for health of water pipe smoke. The preliminary results of the previous study will be continued 2007 with a new pump for the waterpipe. Smoking conditions will be standardized and the nicotine and water content of the Cambridge filter pads will be analyzed. The extracts will be investigated in mutagenicity and zytotoxicity tests. The study on extracts of cigarette smoke has been postponed. A preliminary study on the cytotoxicity of waterpipe smoke was performed. Waterpipe smoke showed a dose-dependent cytotoxicity. The water in the bowl reduced the cytotoxicity, the removal of water increased the toxicity. The determination of the content of water or nicotine was adapted to the condition of water-pipe use, first results were shown.
