Purpose of research: Applied research

The intended project is aimed on the establishment of a breeding program to develop productive raspberry cultivars with improved resistance to fungal cane diseases for German fruit growers. There is no raspberry breeding in Germany at the moment. Preliminary research is needed in order to start a raspberry breeding program at the Julius Kühn-Institute in Dresden. The expected results will be used to pre-estimate the success of a scientifically based raspberry breeding program. The intended project is divided into four different parts. In the first part a field plot under raspberry cultivation for several years will be evaluated on the presence and distribution of different fungal pathogens affecting raspberries. In the second part genetic resources of raspberry and tayberry will be planted into this field plot in order to evaluate resistance to cane diseases. Besides, an artificial greenhouse inoculation test for selected pathogens will be established (third part). Subsequently, selected raspberry genotypes will be tested and the results obtained will be compared with the results of the field trial. First test-crosses with selected parents will be performed and the resulting progeny will be used to study the genetics of resistance (fourth part).The expected results of the project will be published in referred and non-referred journals and presented onto national and international meetings and congresses. They will contribute directly to the German raspberry production and are of particular importance for the three partners involved in this project. Furthermore, the results can be used by other private plant breeders who are interested in raspberry breeding. The success of the intended breeding program will be pre-estimated in the end of the project. Based on the results obtained it should be decided, whether a raspberry breeding program should be initiated or not.
