Project code: BfR-BIOS-08-1322-317
Contract period: 01.04.2008 - 31.12.2010
Purpose of research: Applied research

The identification of bacteria is performed traditionally by using a variety of biochemical tests and is usually very time consuming. In recent years, PCR methods have been frequently used for diagnosis. PCR techniques are faster than biochemical methods and are often used for subtyping pathogenic bacteria, e.g. the virulotyping, MLST, MLVA, etc. The MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry for identification of bacteria is a newly developed method that is well suited for species identification (see attached report). However, the technique also offers opportunities for further differentiation, e.g. identifying biovars, serovars and pathovars. We want to apply the technique for Vibrio and Yersinia, in order to differentiate e.g. environmental and pathogenic strains.
