MALDI-TOF MS-based identification of microorganisms from complex samples
Project
Project code: BfR-BIOS-08-1322-410
Contract period: 01.04.2009
- 31.12.2009
Purpose of research: Applied research
Currently, MALDI-TOF MS is intensively evaluated in the field of microbial diagnostics due to its speed and automation capabilities. Extensive application in the fields of clinical and veterinary diagnostics has been prevented by two issues. Firstly, the conventional finger-print-based approach exhibits as a phenotypic method a certain degree of dependency from experimental and biological factors associated with limited reproducibility and specificity. Secondly, the method is mainly restricted to the analysis or pure cultures requiring timeconsuming isolation procedures. This projects aims to test the coupling of immunomagnetic separation techniques to MALDI-TOF MS by using bioinformatic approaches in order to allow a sensitive and specific MS-based bacterial identification in complex samples.
