Purpose of research: Applied research
Many polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can be considered as classical carcinogens. Metabolic activation is a frequent prerequisite for their toxicity. In our industrialised society PAHs have become ubiquitous. Thus exposure to PAHs is inevitable as they are taken up via the food chain, inhalation and skin absorption.The toxicological assessment of PAHs tends to focus on their metabolism in eukaryotes. Bacteria have long been known to metabolise and to potentially activate PAHs as well. However, there are no studies looking at the metabolism of PAHs by skin bacteria. Thus this project proposal suggests to investigate the potential metabolism of PAHs by human skin bacteria.
