Project code: BfR-PRS-08-1322-476
Contract period: 01.03.2011 - 31.12.2011
Purpose of research: Applied research

Fluorinated and perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) show a very high thermal and chemical stability and thus are used - frequently in mixtures - besides waxes and paraffin composites, for the manufacturing of grease and water resistant paper. Polyfluoro alkylphosphate esters (PAPs) and perfluoro acrylates are commonly applied as starting materials for surface modifications. In the meantime PFCs are ubiquitous and can be detected in human blood as well as in human breast milk. Although during the last years many analytic methods were developed for the detection of PFCs in environmental samples originating from water, soil or air, food contact materials are tested only recently for these substances. Previous examinations were focused on perfluoro alkyl carbonic acid, perfluoro alkyl sulfonates and fluoro telomere alcohols, the fluorinated starting materials however, which are directly used as paper coating, like perfluro acrylate and PAPs, were not investigated so far.As Begley et al. showed it is possible for PFCs to diffuse or migrate into food through the contact of packaging material and food, especially in the presence of emulsifiers, and so taken up by the consumer. New examinations of Begley et al. considered not only typical PAPs, but also degradation products of perfluoro octanic acid (PFOA), perflurosulfonic acid (PFOS) and volatile fluorotelomer alcohols. In the BfR recommendation XXXVI. of paper, cardboard and cardboards for food contact and the recommendation XXXVI./2 of paper, cardboard and cardboards different perfluorinated compounds are listed as a surface coating materials and the maximum allowed quantities are given. It has to be examined whether recycled papers contain PFCs and if these substances migrate into food.
