Project
Project code: BfR-SiN-08-1322-436
Contract period: 01.04.2010
- 31.12.2011
Purpose of research: Applied research
The term pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA) describes a group of more than 350 different com-pounds with a common basic structure. PA are produced as secondary metabolites by more than 6000 plant species belonging to the families of Boraginaceae, Compositae (As-teraceae) and Leguminosae (Fabaceae). PA occur world-wide.Basic alkaloids seem to accumulate in the seeds, whereas the respective N-oxides domi-nate in the green parts of a plant. It is assumed that PA are among the most widely distrib-uted natural toxins affecting human, wildlife and livestock. For protection of human and animal health sensitive and efficient analytical methods are required which ensure the summary recording of the PA down to the level of 0.3 µg/kg food or feedstuff.
