Melamine is a chemical intermediate used in the manufacture of amino resins and plastics. Other end products include countertops, fabrics, glues and flame retardants. In Europe, melamine is approved for use as a monomer and as an additive in plastics and is forbidden in feed and food (Commission Decision of 14 October 2008).In 2008, high levels of melamine in infant milk and other milk products have led to very se-vere health effects in Chinese children. In this case, the primary target organ for melamine toxicity in humans is the kidney. In October 2008, high levels of melamine in hen?s eggs have been found in China. The press associated this with a feeding with illegal contaminated feed with melamine.
