Energy utilization from herb-rich sowing in the agricultural landscape - an ecological and economical alternative for the production of biogas

Project

Project code: 22038211
Contract period: 01.03.2012 - 31.05.2015
Budget: 835,427 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

Herb-rich sowings promise to reduce conflicts between energy crop production and protection of the environment and to ease the growing area competition. The attractive crops increase the diversity in the landscape and reduce the risk of erosion by covering the soil surface throughout the year. The project aims to develop an economically sound cropping system based on perennial, herb-rich plant mixtures as a sustainable alternative to conventional energy crops to offer wildlife habitat. Some plant mixtures shall concentrate on the ecological advantages by using local seeds only. These mixtures could be used in nature protection as well as compensational projects. Focussing on biomass production are mixtures that include species of foreign landscapes. Risks for the local flora are minimised by excluding species with high ability to spread.
