Project code: BfR-LMS-02-G 225-01
Contract period: 01.10.2004 - 28.02.2005
Purpose of research: Applied research

Foods/feeds derived from genetically modified organisms (GMO) have to be labelled according to European harmonized legislation. For control purposes an amplification technique called polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is used targeting DNA sequences specific for each individual GMO. This approach results in a significant amount of different PCRs, which has to be carried out to detect several GMOs in parallel. To overcome the time-consuming PCR step a new approach will be developed, where in a first step DNA isolated from the food or feedstuff is unspecifically amplified by a recently discovered DNA polymerase. In a subsequent step DNA specific for each individual GMO is detected by hybridisation to a nylon membrane or micro array slide.
