Project code: BfR-SiN-08-1322-438
Contract period: 01.04.2010 - 31.12.2010
Purpose of research: Applied research

Maduramicin is licensed in the European Union as feed additive for turkey and chickens for fattening. During manufacturing of feedstuffs a certain amount of previously produced batches remains in theproduction line and causes a contamination of the subsequent produced feed. This crosscontamination resulted in a possible residue of maduramicin in feed material intended for use in nontargetanimals. To make allowance for this unavoidable carryover the EU has defined maximum levels for coccidiostats in feedstuffs intended for use in non-target animals in the directive 2009/8/EC.Maximum levels for all licensed coccidiostats for foodstuffs derived from non-targeted animals are established in the commission regulation (EC) 124/2009. In 2009 a report was submitted to the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health, which included investigations on the subject of exceeding the maximum limit of 2 microgramm/kg maduramicin in eggs although the maximum limit of 0.05 mg/kg defined for carryover in feedstuffs was kept. Therefore further kinetic studies in non-target animal species are necessary to investigate the residue levels of maduramicin in animal products like eggs caused by contaminated feedstuffs in the range ofthe defined maximum level.
