Purpose of research: Applied research

2009: For consumers the use of many consumer products is associated with skin contact and the dermal exposure to several chemicals. To assess possible health risks it is necessary to determine the amount of chemicals migrating from consumer products and therefore can become locally and systemically available.The use of in-vitro methods to assess skin penetration has been recognized as appropriate alternative to in vivo studies. However, there is still the need for development of an in vitro model that combines the migration of compounds from consumer products and their penetration into skin, thereby providing a more realistic exposure scenario. 2010: For consumers the use of many consumer products is associated with skin contact and dermal exposure to several chemicals. High phthalate contents in consumer products represents an ongoing problem for surveillance authorities and is also reflected by the large number of RAPEX notices. Data regarding the content of phthalates in consumer products and their migration is available. The same applies to percutaneous permeation studies of phthalates conducted by direct application of the substance onto skin. However, various studies could demonstrate that relative permeation depends on the dermal loading. For example, if an exposure assessment is performed by combining migration data with a permeation study where the dermal loading was significantly different from the amount migrated, the result of the assessment is likely to be biased.A way to avoid this problem could be demonstrated in the SFP 1322-343 ?Skin Penetration of Substances from Consumer Products?. Within this project it could be demonstrated that the combined assessment of migration and permeation is feasible by direct placement of the consumer product onto the skin specimen. This method can easily be implemented for phthalates in order to assess dermal exposure of these substances from consumer products close to use conditions.
