Project code: BfR-PRS-08-1322-424
Contract period: 01.02.2009 - 31.12.2010
Purpose of research: Applied research

The numbers of children suffering from various kinds of allergies has been found constantly increasing over recent times. According to certain estimates, fragrance ingredients represent the second most common cause for allergies induced during childhood while nickel is most common. Toys are scented to inspire consumers for purchasing those products, to cover unpleasant odors and smells and/or to distinguish from other toys. Due to increasing rates of allergies in the small, research on the role of scented toys and on the actual exposure of children to allergenic fragrances through these kinds of consumer products is urgently needed. The present project is aimed to address this need and to estimate the real exposure of children against fragrance allergens in scented toys. Therefore, an analytical method has to be developed to determine fragrance allergens and to work-out any possible correlation between the emission and the contents of fragrance allergens present in scented toys.
