Purpose of research: Applied research

Coccidiostats are licensed as feed additives for the prevention and treatment of coccidiosis. They can be used at approved concentrations in a certain time interval for broilers, turkey and young chickenup to an age of 16 weeks but not for laying hens. In the EU decoquinate, monensin, robenidine, lasalocid, halofuginone, narasin, salinomycin, maduramicin and diclazuril are registered as feed additives. The occurrence of low concentrations of coccidiostats in feed and eggs are regularly reported within the scope of official controls or in literature (Cannavan et al. 2000; Mortier et al 2005). The reason is mainly a contamination of feeding stuffs in feed mills.By the reason of carry over the zero tolerance regulated by law for residues of feed additives not licensed for certain animal species could not be kept, both for feed and food. In 2009 the EU enactedthe directive 2009/8/EC in which maximum levels for coccidiostats in feed and the commission regulation (EC) 124/2009 in which maximum levels for coccidiostats in food derived from non target animalswere laid down. The analytical method requirements are changed by the definition of maximum levels in feed and food. For investigations to verify an exceeding of maximum levels in food and feed, methods with high precision have to be developed. For the control of the maximum levels of all coccidiostats in the different feed- and foodstuffs the use of LC-MS/MS is most suitable. But the LC-MS/MS methods developed to control the zero tolerance have a low precision. The reasons for the low precision are matrix effects. Therefore a close investigation on matrix effects with different methods was initiated, with the aim to enhance the precision of the methods.
