Project code: BfR-PRS-08-1322-246-09
Contract period: 01.02.2009 - 31.12.2009
Purpose of research: Applied research

The use of waterpipes (shisha) increased considerably among young adults in Germany. Only a few data exist about the health hazards and the consequences of long time use of waterpipes.Preliminary studies of the BfR showed that the smoke of waterpipes has cytotoxic properties. Using a custom-made pump for the smoking of waterpipe standardized smoking procedures have been developed. The smoke of waterpipes will be investigated with regard to its toxicological activity (genotoxicity and cytotoxicity).
