Project code: BfR-SiN-08-1322-426
Contract period: 01.04.2009 - 31.12.2009
Purpose of research: Applied research

Flavophospholipol (Flavomycin, Bambermycin, Moenomycin) an antibiotic was used in the EU as feed additive both for growth promoting purposes and for prevention of coccidiosis. The main effect of antibiotics is an improvement of the feed efficiency by affecting the gastro-intestinal flora. For the reason of possible side effects for human health (resistance) the authorisation was withdrawn on 01.01.2006. In contrast in the USA the use of Flavophospholipol as growth promoter is allowed further on.For the detection of Flavophospholipol in feedingstuffs a microbiological method is regulated in the eights directive 78/633/EWG. This method is suitable for screening purposes because it is reliable, cheap and easy to carry out. For the reason of nonspecific reactions with components of complex matrices or other authorised or nonauthorised antibiotics erroneous positive results may be obtained by the microbiological assay. For example in Germany 2008 Flavophospholipol was detected in a feed sample, but first tests by LC-MS/MS could not confirm this result. Therefore a specific and sensitive method for confirmation purposes in official control is unambiguous.
