Contract period: 25.11.2008 - 31.05.2012
Budget: 369,627 Euro
Purpose of research: Basic research

'Running a Jodmonitorings on a representative sample of the adult population in Germany. As part of the study on adult health in Germany (DEGS) will be determined as possible in all 7500 participants aged 18 to 89 years following parameters: iodine and sodium excretion in spot urine, thyroid volume (ultrasonography), thyroid hormones (TSH, fT3, fT4) and thyroid autoantibodies (anti-TPO anti-TG) in serum. There are visited in a period of 3 years 180 randomly selected locations throughout Germany, performed the serum and urine obtained, as well as the SD sonography. The laboratory analyzes are then held in the laboratory of Robert Koch Institute. Using the data, it will be possible to make statements about the average iodine intake at the population level, to compare them with the WHO recommendations, and to take further action according to the supply situation. Furthermore, can be explained by the measurement of sodium excretion, the average salt intake to calculate the population level. This is important because it is being considered in the EU to limit the salt content of manufactured foods. Since iodized table salt has a significant source of iodine represents would have a reduced absorption in the future with a higher dose may iodination of common salt to react. '
