Development of analysis methods for the determination of ergot alkaloids and monitoring in selected food and feed
Project
Project code: BfR-SiN-08-1322-273
Contract period: 01.05.2005
- 31.12.2009
Purpose of research: Applied research
Ergot alkaloids are mainly produced by the fastidious parasitic fungus Claviceps spp. which infects the ovary of various Poaceae such as rye, wheat, triticale, barley, sorghum and grasses of which rye, triticale and grasses are the most affected ones.Mean alkaloid content and pattern show considerable variability depending on the producing fungal strain, the host plant, the geographic origin of host and fungus and the climatic conditions. Up to now no analytical reference method for the determination of ergot alkaloids in feed and food is available. Occurrence data of single ergot alkaloids in feed and food are scarce. Information on the toxicological properties is hardly available and thus health effects related are not sufficiently investigated.
