Hazard identification of Salmonella in the food chain (Subroject IP3 within the joint project Food-Borne Zoonotic Infections of Humans (FBI-Zoo))

Project

Food and consumer protection

This project contributes to the research aim 'Food and consumer protection'. Which funding institutions are active for this aim? What are the sub-aims? Take a look:
Food and consumer protection

Project code: BfR-BIOS-08-1334-184
Contract period: 01.10.2007 - 30.09.2009
Purpose of research: Applied research

The aim of the project is to perform a hazard identification of Salmonella isolates which have been isolated from food-producing animals, the food production chain, and the resulting products. The genetic content will be compared to isolates from humans. The identification of selected gene markers consisting of housekeeping genes, virulence markers, resistance and mobile elements will be performed using a DNA-microarray indicating the presence or absence of important gene markers. The data will be used to assess the potential risk of Salmonella to cause sporadic infections in humans or outbreaks caused by the ingestion of contaminated food. In order to characterize those strains in detail established molecular typing methods (Pulsed field gelelectrophoresis, Multiple Locus-Variable Number Tandem-Repeat-Analysis, plasmid profiles) will be used.
