Project code: BfR-PRS-08-1322-305
Contract period: 01.04.2007 - 31.12.2007
Purpose of research: Applied research

The skin is known as an important target organ for substances released from commodities onto the skin surface, e.g. polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from rubber materials. Chemicals such as PAHs are metabolized by cytochrome P450-dependent monooxygenases (CYP) and other enzymes. Various CYP enzymes are expressed in human skin, e.g. CYP1B1, CYP1A1, CYP2B6, CYP2D6, CYP2E1, CYP3A4, CYP2S1. To gain some insights into dermal metabolism and toxicity of relevant substances and mixtures present in commodities, the activity and induction of CYP proteins will be studied in human keratinocytes in culture (isolated from ex vivo skin, HaCaT cell line) upon treatment with certain PAHs.
