Project code: BfR-ZEBET-08-1328-166
Contract period: 01.10.2001 - 30.09.2004
Purpose of research: Applied research

V79 cells were genetically engineered for stable co-expression of human cytochrome P450 and genetic variants of human N-Acetyltransferase. Both enzymes together handle aromatic amines, e.g. 2-aminofluorene and other structurally related chemicals. As for all chemicals and drugs it is of fundamental importance to understand metabolism in order to identify metabolites which are responsible for toxicological and pharmacological consequences. The newly constructed cell lines are a perfect tool to investigate and understand metabolic activation of aromatic amines. The genetechnological approach is perfect for substituting animal experimentation and at the same time may generate data of immediate relevance for humans and in that way, allow for a more realistic risk assessment.
