Practicability of the certification system concerning the prohibition of the use of genetically modified organisms (GMO) in organic farming
Project
Project code: BfR-LMS-02-1337-162
Contract period: 01.05.2002
- 31.12.2003
Purpose of research: Basic research
Major objective of the project, which has been granted by BÖL, will be the further development of the inspection and certification system according to regulation EEC No. 2092/91 concerning the surveillance of the prohibition of the use of genetically modified organisms (GMO) and their derivates in organic food and feedstuff. The project is a co-operation between the BfR and the certification body Gesellschaft für Ressourcenschutz mbH (GfRS). Methodical procedure of the certification system will be analysed. The interfaces between organic and conventional production are of major interest. The project starts with the theoretical analysis of the course and execution of the certification system. In practice a standard operating procedure (SOP) and inspection checklist will be created and checked during visits in farms and firms. Accompanying a laboratory check of selected samples is carried out with real-time PCR to detect a possible GMO contamination. As a result of the project a manual taken all inspections and laboratory analysis into account for the implementation in certification systems will be provided.
