Commercial organic fertilizers of animal and plant origin for organic farming - characterization and recommendations for the farming practice
Project
Project code: 2811OE034
Contract period: 01.08.2011
- 31.07.2013
Budget: 168,027 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
In organic farming commercial fertilizers are increasingly being used. Intensively managed organic farms such as horticulture and cash crop farms without animal husbandry need externally supplied nutrients and organic matter to achieve the high nutrient demand, e.g. of vegetables. Commonly, commercial organic fertilizers derived from animals or plants are used. However, for many of these materials only little information is available on their origin, their chemical composition and their proper use. The project aims to characterize organic NPK-fertilizers derived from animal and plant residues applicable in organic farming. Their fertilizer value and the restrictions for their use as well as recommendations for their application will be compiled. Therefore, a KTBL-working group has been established that selects suitable fertilizers and determines the relevant criteria to evaluate the fertilizers. The aim is to compile documents for up to 65 different fertilizers currently available on the market. In a stepwise procedure, the fertilizers will be described using analysis data and literature information. For each fertilizer a specification sheet will be produced with relevant information on the characterization (e.g., nutrient contents, organic and inorganic contaminants, organic matter, hygienic status, physico-chemical properties, origin and production process). With these data sheets farmers and the extension services will receive aggregated information on the fertilizers which will help to appropriately choose of the type of fertilizer and to get the optimal fertilizer value.
