Collaborative project: Development and testing of an animal location system using passive SAW transponders as part of stable management systems – Subproject 1

Project

Project code: 28154T2310
Contract period: 01.02.2012 - 14.10.2015
Budget: 199,582 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

The discovery of individual animals in large groups binds much work of the herd manager or other specialists with increasing automation. The aims of the project are developing and testing a new location system for cattle in large housing systems with surface acoustic wave (SAW). The technical concept is based on the use of passive SAW transponders with long read range and the use of multiple reader antennas at various event locations in the barn. The SAW- animal positioning is developed as a module for future farm management systems and to automate the identification of individual animals in large groups. The development is divided into the following work packages: a) Preparing the technical fine concept for SAW animal positioning; b) Development and testing of a SAW chips with special sensor features and long read ranges for specific use in animal positioning; c) Development of special reader antennas for spatial location of SAW chips; d) development of locating stationary terminals for use in the barn; e) Integration of multiple reader antennas for different location ranges (near and far positioning); f) Development of the positioning software for animals; g) Designing and testing a test facility within a large dairy farm with 1,500 animals; h) Development of an evaluation method, defining characteristics of the evaluation, data collection and statistical evaluation of the success criteria; i) Reporting.
