Collaborative project: Electronic Animal Identification Systems based on Ultra High Radio Frequency Identification - subproject 4

Project

Project code: 28154T1310
Contract period: 01.04.2012 - 31.08.2015
Budget: 215,589 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

The goal of this project is the development, implementation and evaluation of innovative methods for electronic animal identification using radio-frequency-identification systems (RFID) working within the ultra-high-frequency (UHF) wave band. UHF systems have many advantages: greater detection distances, rapid and simultaneous identification of transponders in the antenna field and possibility of localization of objects. The sensitivity to water or metal is a known disadvantage of UHF systems and is compensated by implementing new methods. In the project different UHF ear tags for cows, sheep and pigs and UHF readers for stationary and mobile applications are developed and tested in the laboratory and in practice. The suitability of UHF animal identification system is tested within different scenarios. On a regular basis the simultaneous detection of animals while walking through a gate is tested. The health and performance of pigs are monitored by calculating the occupation frequency and duration at hot spots like trough and drinker or by calculating the use of certain areas with a localization system. Software for data management supports the laboratory and field experiments. Furthermore, a benefit-cost analysis about the use of modern electronic animal identification systems using the example of UHF systems are carried out.
