Collaborative project: Press residues - a by-production from oil production - a sustainable ingredient for the production of high-quality feed for aquaculture – Subproject 1

Project

Project code: 2817300210
Contract period: 01.06.2012 - 31.05.2015
Budget: 395,619 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

The aim of the current project is to investigate the potential of by-products from oil production as a novel and sustainable ingredient for the production of feed for aquaculture in particular for the breeding of trout. Therefore, four different raw materials, residues from sunflower, soy, rapeseed and linseed oil production, were chosen. These materials were extruded adapting the extrusion parameters to obtain fish pellets with specific physical and nutritional properties. The acceptance and nutritional quality were evaluated in feeding experiments. However, some components of the press residues and grits such as polyphenols and fibers might have an adverse effect on the trout´s acceptance and bioavailability of essential nutrient matter. Therefore, these compounds were removed by different processing technologies in further experiments. Thus, once again the recipes and extrusion techniques have to be adapted to produce fish feed with optimal properties. The refined fish pellets were again examined in a breeding study to investigate the influence of fibers and polyphenols on the animals' acceptance and nutritional quality of the sustainable innovative feed for aquaculture. At the end of the project, we want to show the potential of by-products from the oil production as alternative ingredients for a sustainable and innovative aquaculture.
