Project code: JKI-ÖPV-08-034
Contract period: 01.10.2005 - 31.12.2006
Purpose of research: Basic research

Veterinary medicines enter soils along with manure applications. These highly effective substances may cause long-term effects in ecosystems, and in case of their bioaccumulation even higher trophic levels are concerned. In general the potential of veterinary medicines to accumulate is considered to be low as their low log KOW-values do not exceed the limit value of 3 that usually is taken as an indication for a bioaccumulation potential and, if required, as a trigger for testing the accumulative potential in aquatic environments. It might be questionable to assume that the same mechanisms apply for the terrestrial environment. Earthworms play an extraordinary role in the soil ecosystem and, by ingesting soil, some species might be exposed to residues to a larger extent. As an example, sulfadiazine, a relevant soil pollutant within the group of veterinary medicines, was selected as test item for the bioaccumulation test with Eisenia fetida.
