Collaborative project: Natural substances against bird damage - Development of a biological repellent applied as seed treatment -Subproject 1
Project
Project code: 2814702211
Contract period: 01.07.2012
- 30.06.2015
Budget: 151,851 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
In this project a biological repellent based on plant substances against birds is intended to be developed. The goal of the project is to treat corn in a way that damage on seeds and seedlings by birds can be avoided. Furthermore baits against for example rodents could be treated with the repellent to avoid accidental poisoning of birds. Several candidate plants will be screened for repellent properties of their extractions tested with birds in aviaries and in the field. Potential substances will be continuously fractionated, analysed and mixed until an effective bird repellent is found. The project will help to built to scientific foundation for developing effective seed or bait treatments with natural compounds that can be used in integrated as well as in organic farming. Results will be published in national and international journals and will be presented on conferences.
