Project code: BfR-PRS-08-1322-534
Contract period: 01.03.2013 - 31.12.2014
Purpose of research: Basic research

Breast milk is the ideal nutrition for infants during their first year of life, because it contains the favourable composition of nutritional substances for the baby, adapted to their metabolism. However, the infant ingests not only vital nutrients, but also residues. Thus, the continuous examination of breast milk is of relevance, especially for ubiquitous biopersistent residues. A substance class, which is causing high concern since 1999 are perfluorinated compounds (PFAS). Pronounced perfluoro octanesulfonate (PFOS) and perfluoro octanoic acid (PFOA) exposures can cause harmful effects, resulting in liver damage, developmental and possibly reproduction disorders. The usage of PFOS is banned in the EU since 2008 with a few exceptions like fire extinguisher foams.
