Production processes

Project code: JKI-SG-08-2200
Contract period: 01.03.2013 - 31.12.2016
Purpose of research: Basic research

Economically most important diseases of potato are late blight (causal agent Phytophthora infestans, Pi) and Potato virus Y (PVY). Expenses to prevent appearance of diseases are high, only partially successful and usually not permitted in organic farming. Under economical and environmental aspects it is necessary to develop cultivars with combined resistance. Compared to other German projects concerning Pi it is intended to exploit qualitative resistance genes as they are easier to handle in potato and show stronger effects then QTLs. For a sustainable use their marker assisted pyramiding is necessary. Suitable starting material was developed - backcross lines from somatic hybrids with extreme resistance to PVY and two Pi-resistance genes from wild species (Solanum tarnii and S. bulbocastanum). Segregating populations have been developed to generate molecular markers for PVY resistance. To detect Pi resistance published markers can be used after their testing. In parallel material will be analyzed for presence of resistance originating from wild species to pests as well as their durability.
