Differences in the DNA-methylation of Fusarium spores
Project
Project code: JKI-EP-08-2214
Contract period: 01.01.2013
- 31.12.2013
Purpose of research: Applied research
DNA methylation is used by microorganisms to adapt to changing environmental conditions. According to the prevailing opinion a methylated gene reduces its expression. A specific adaption requires the sporulation. Because of the plasticity of genes with regard to methylation and de-methylation, differences of the methylation of Fusarium spores will be investigated. The enriched spore material will be surveyed for changes in the methylation of key genes like Histons, etc. May be the differences in the methylation pattern can explain the observed lack of pathogenicity after a cultivation on a rich nutrition medium. Depending on the spore population and on the offered nutrition specific genes can be switched on or off by methylation, resulting in different phenotypes.
