Studies on the metabolism of azo dyes in clothing textiles and cosmetics: Evidence of azo cleavage by skin bacteria and characterization of metabolites

Purpose of research: Basic research
The exposure to colorants in clothing textiles and cosmetics has to be assessed by considering the capacity of human skin bacteria for azo cleavage leading to aromatic amines. These amines penetrate the skin better as the corresponding colorants and have a certain toxic potential. Disperse Yellow 3 shall be used as a model compound and the possible cleavage by human skin bacteria in vitro shall be studied. A further model compound (Disperse Orange 3) and its metabolite will be analysed in an in vitro system for possible adsorption to scales of psoriasis patients and for skin penetration using pig skin in vitro.
