Project code: 2814EPS002
Contract period: 01.09.2013 - 31.12.2016
Budget: 1,532,453 Euro
Purpose of research: Demonstration

Main objective of the joint project is to expand and improve the cultivation and utilisation of soy beans in Germany. For this purpose a network of demonstration farms should be developed which facilitates the transfer of knowledge between research institutions, extension services and practice. The network includes 117 organic and conventional farms in 11 federal states with a focus on Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. There are two categories of demonstration farms: “Best-Practice-Farms” demonstrate cultivation of soy beans based on current scientific knowledge. Various topics regarding production techniques will be presented on demonstration fields. Farms of the second category provide field-related data on soy beans and other comparable or following crops. The analysis of these data gives information on profitability, effectiveness as a preceding crop and ecosystem services of soy beans. The joint project which includes 4 different projects is coordinated by the Bayerische Landesanstalt für Landwirtschaft (LfL). Here, all data collected on demonstration farms are merged into a database and analyses are provided for project partners and researchers. In cooperation with the Landeskuratorium für Pflanzliche Erzeugung in Bayern e.V. (LKP) 19 conventional demonstration farms in Bavaria are advised regarding cultivation of soy beans. Additional demonstration farms (organic and conventional) are located in Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Thuringia, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg and Saarland. Support and advice for these farms are provided by institutions within the Federal States. The Landesvereinigung für den Ökologischen Landbau in Bayern e.V. (LVÖ) advises and supports 29 bavarian in cooperation with the Erzeugerringe organic farms within the demonstration network “soy beans” regarding production and utilization of organic soy beans as animal feed. Furthermore, an exemplary value chain for organic soy beans is developed illustrating all stages of cultivation, processing and utilisation in animal feeding. Key success factors for the development of value chains for soy beans will be compiled. Besides the demonstration farms in Baden-Wuerttemberg the Landwirtschaftliches Technologiezentrum Augustenberg (LTZ) supervises and supports the subcontractors of the value chain in Baden-Wuerttemberg and the subcontractors for the consultation in Rhineland-Palatinate. Together with farmers, subcontractors, additional federate state agencies, private consulting firms and further companies an exemplary value chain for soya will be established. This chain illustrates cultivation, seed production, grain collection and processing aspects of food and animal feedstuff production. The project partner Taifun will focus on two topics: 1. International acquisition of knowledge through comprehensive literature research and expert surveys. Evaluation and testing of this knowledge on demonstration farms. Presentation of the acquired knowledge and all other results of the joint project on www.sojafoerderring.de. 2. Exemplary illustration of a successful value chain for soy beans used for tofu production. Key aspect of the demonstration network “soy beans” is the transfer of knowledge between research, extension services and practice. Therefore, events like field demonstrations, workshops or lectures on cultivation and utilisation of soy beans take place throughout the duration of the project. Besides publications in scientific and professional journals, the project website (www.sojafoerderring.de) will be an integral part of transferring knowledge as all information gained within the network will be made available there.
