Identification and characterization of basidiomycetous fungi associated with Esca disease of grapevine in South Africa
Project
Project code: JKI-OW-08-1178
Contract period: 01.03.2010
- 31.03.2016
Purpose of research: Applied research
Since several years now wood diseases of grapevine are in a steady increase worldwide. For instance, Esca eventually leads to a distinct weakening and, finally, death of the vines. Causal agents are not well known for most of the wine growing regions, especially so with respect to white rot (degradation both of lignin and cellulose) fungi, all of them belonging to the basidiomycetes. The following aims have been articulated for the project: i) Characterisation of the basidiomycetous complex associated with the diseases; ii) determination of the infection pathway of basidiomycetous fungi; iii) description of new basidiomycete species from South Africa.
